Day 9 - Capri then Home
Day 9 – Capri and our last stop till home.
The emotions are as mixed as the weather. We’re excited to go home and sad to leave, and the weather seemed to match our changes in mood. We started the day in Sorrento with a clear sky and a ferry ride to the Isle of Capri, where the seas started to get rougher and the sky clouded over. When we landed in Capri we immediately took a boat tour around the island to view the rock formations, the insanely expensive villas, and the gorgeous blue water.
From the boat tour we took a ride on the Funiculare, a tram that is built to climb the steep slope up to Capri Town. A short walking tour to the gardens and fantastic viewpoints (with 50 cent toilets) led to free time searching out deals in the narrow, twisting streets. The searching was not so successful, with the Gucci and Prada shopkeepers not willing to barter. Maybe the nearby hotel at a 1000 Euros per night should have tipped us off. A few managed a lunch of swordfish while the rest settled for handmade pizza.
Feeling second-class, we took the tram back down to the marina where the prices fit our dwindling supply of Euros. Final gifts were secured, and a hydrofoil ride got us to Napoli. Three more hours of bus riding (complete with our last Autogrille) brought us to a beautiful room with about 400 students all on tour and having supper at the same time. Not our most enjoyable atmosphere.
The energy at the hotel is high with all the packing and luggage weighing. The day starts early again, and will be extra long with the 7-hour time change and 10 hours on the plane over the ocean. The kids have been great and it has been amazing to watch their eyes light up with each new site or landscape. Thanks for giving us the pleasure of taking them on this wonderful adventure. See you at 7.30pm in Winnipeg tomorrow.
P.S. Today was the day our first item was forgotten at the hotel, notable for Kallie running full tilt down this winding road while the bus waited. Images of “Chariots of Fire” leapt to mind as Riccardo hummed and mimed the slow-motion sequence.
